The lessons we learn about money...

I grew up in an average American family. My father worked two and three jobs my whole life. He was a minister, a schoolteacher and one of about twelve other titles he held at any given time. He worked very hard, long hours with virtually no time for anything he wanted to do. I watched him fall asleep in his chair, within moments of sitting down, for the majority of my time at home with him.

My mother managed the household on a shoestring budget. She was a pro at shopping sales and finding the best value for her money. For years I watched my mother worry about bills and how they would make it through each summer (schoolteachers didn't get paid in the summer).

In spite of what might have been ‘hard times', we still had a very happy family. I always felt safe and secure. We had everything we needed—except a lot of money. My parents told me that money wasn't “important” and that they just didn't “care” about having money .

Does father always know best?

My first life lesson about money was that it was very hard to make, there was never enough and even though you had to work like a dog to have it, it wasn't very important and I shouldn't care too much about it. How do you think that life lesson served me later on? Let's find out.

When my mortgage company started making money I wasn't prepared for it. I immediately went on spending sprees—buying anything and everything I wanted. Of course, I wasn't using cash… I was using my good old pals—Visa, MC and AMEX—to fund my newfound lifestyle of excess.
